✈ De Travel Experiences aims to satisfy your curiosity and unique tastes by highlighting premium spots for fun, food, and relaxation through my eyes and your suggestions. Here now is my take on Port Lavaca in Texas.
Port Lavaca is a coastal city with a good, homey feel. Located in Calhoun County in Texas, it is about 110 miles from the notable city of Houston. Visitors looking to explore places in Texas, where they can have a good time, might want to add Port Lavaca to their bucket list.
THINGS TO DO
You could spend your day in a variety of ways, from relaxing at the comfort of your rented abode under the notable Texan sunshine to admiring the scenery at a local beach with the latest Thomas J. Stanley’s book at hand.
I found The Lighthouse Beach to be very clean, it’s a nice area to take a walk, have a picnic, or just to sit and watch the birds. For bird watchers, South Texas – near the convergence of two major migration areas, the Central and Mississippi Flyways – is a close depiction of heaven on earth. The Gulf shoreline in the region around Port Lavaca offers a diverse habitat that attracts a vast array of bird species. Can you believe that 613 varieties of our feathered friends have been identified in Texas? The most of any state! Some of the less common birds you can see here in Port Lavaca include Roseate Spoonbills, Wood Storks, Reddish Egrets, and unusual gulls.
Port Lavaca hosts numerous festivals that can spice up your Texas beach vacation. You can enjoy live music, an international barbecue cook-off, and watch gunfighter shows.
May sound odd but trust me, for some, nothing equals standing right in the middle of a roaring crowd. So, look up the local sporting events when you visit. And if you’re in the mood for a 30-minute drive, make your way to the Riverside Stadium at Victoria.
You can enjoy the city even more with a visit to the Calhoun County Museum, a cultural museum with collections of local artifacts, diagrams, and a lighthouse Fresnel lens. This is your best bet for a bad weather alternative.
You are sure to enjoy a tour of the Fulton Mansion, which was made a historical site after surviving its 8th hurricane. Be aware that the Fulton Mansion is 50 miles away, but worth it if you want a glimpse into what the life of an affluent family was like in the late 1800s.
If one of your passions in life is fly fishing, you are in luck. I don’t fish myself but inhabitants have told me that The Fishing Pier Park and The Indianola Fishing Marina are the best places for fishing.
Not leaving out golf courses, Port Lavaca reportedly remains one of the best in offering high-quality deals at the Hatch Bend Country Club.
The city of Port Lavaca provides tourists, as well as inhabitants, with topnotch, lovable, and comforting accommodations. If you’re traveling with a pet, you can try La Quinta Inn & Suites. Not only is it pet friendly but you won’t be charged an additional fee. The large rooms of Best Western Port Lavaca Inn will satisfy your space preference, keeping in mind the hotel is simple but clean. They are many others such as: the American Best Value Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Suites, and Executive Inn Port Lavaca.
There are many places to go to get a taste of some of the many wonderful local dishes in Port Lavaca. Get healthy portions at La Antigua where the employees are always ready and willing to welcome you with a cheerful heart and open arms. Looking for the best salsa in town? Try El Patio Restaurant and its old-style, colorful atmosphere. Texas Traditions Grill & Bakery has great food, as well as polite and friendly staff; Some describe ‘Four Seasons Restaurant’ as the best kept secret in Port Lavaca.
There you have it, my take on the Port Lavaca scene. Please note that the spots I picked are based on my snippet of an experience. I do plan to explore the area again in the future, so my report might be different next time. Either way, have fun if/when you visit.
